Learn how to register for a School of English as a Second Language program

Admission Requirements

• Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent (18 years of age and under).
• Mature Student status*, no OSSD required (*19 years of age and older).
• Permanent Residents of Canada will need to present legible copies of both sides of their Permanent Resident Cards, or other proof of residency.
• All applicants must complete a placement test and achieve a minimum of Level 1 to be considered for the program.

Placement Test

The George Brown level placement test usually takes place the week before classes start. See Key Dates for specific test dates. Students either take the George Brown College EAP level placement test or choose to submit IELTS or TOEFL for level placement into the EAP program, but they may not choose both. Once the choice is made, it is final. The IELTS or TOEFL score report must be written within (2) years prior to the student’s session start date and must be submitted before the session start date.

Applicants must be 18 years of age or older at the start of classes and complete a placement test.

Placement Test

Once students have registered, they must take a placement test to determine their level of English proficiency before beginning the ESL program. A test time will be supplied upon registration.

The EAP level placement test usually takes place the week before classes start. See Key Dates for specific test dates. Students either take the George Brown College EAP level placement test or choose to submit IELTS or TOEFL for level placement into the EAP program, but they may not choose both. Prerequisite(s)

Unless you are registering for ESL IA (first beginner level), you must come in for an English placement test to determine the level you should start in. You can also present IELTS (Academic) or TOEFL test results to the program coordinator and be admitted directly into the appropriate ESL level. The tests must be taken within the last two months and the test results must be submitted before the scheduled date of the placement test.

If you are interested in registering for upcoming classes, you can register in person at a George Brown Student Service Centre. You can register in person at any campus during their hours of operation; you do not have to register at the campus where your course is offered.
